A Brief History of Daylight Saving Time You might be surprised to learn that DST wasn't always a thing. In fact, it was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but it didn't become widely adopted until World War I. Germany and Austria were the first countries to implement DST, on April 30, 1916, as a way to conserve energy for the war effort.
