International Romani Day is just around the corner! On April 8th, 2025, people from all over the world will come together to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Romani people. And I'm super excited to dive into the history and traditions surrounding this special day! So, who are the Romani people? Also known as Roma, they're a traditionally nomadic ethnic group believed to have originated from the Indian subcontinent. For centuries, they've been migrating throughout Europe and other parts of the world, developing a unique culture that's a beautiful blend of Indian, European, and Middle Eastern influences. A brief history... The Romani people have faced discrimination, persecution, and enslavement throughout their history. In the 1500s, they were forced into slavery in Eastern Europe, and later, during WWII, hundreds of thousands of Romani people were brutally murdered in the Holocaust.
