Way back in 1871, Sir John Lubbock, a British banker and politician, introduced the concept of bank holidays. His aim was to create more leisure time for workers, allowing them to recharge and come back to their jobs with renewed energy and productivity. Initially, four bank holidays were established: Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August, and Christmas Day.
