A Brief History Father's Day , as we know it today, was first celebrated in the United States in the early 20th century. The idea was conceived by Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a civil war veteran and single parent. She was inspired by the success of Mother's Day, and with the help of her pastor and other community leaders, she organized the first Father's Day celebration on June 10, 1910, at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church in Spokane, Washington.
