Growing up, she was an athletic and curious kid, exceling in tennis, and later earned a bachelor's degree in English and astronomy from Stanford University. Her passion for space exploration led her to earn a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford in 1978. In 1983, Ride made history as the first American woman in space, aboard the STS-7 mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger.
