A Brief History of Illinois Illinois has been inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years, with the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site showcasing the remnants of an ancient Cahokia Indian city. In 1673, French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette became the first Europeans to venture into the region. The area was later part of the French colony of New France until it was ceded to the British in 1763. In 1787, Illinois became part of the United States with the Northwest Ordinance, and in 1818, it was officially admitted as the 21st state.
