National Illinois Day - December 7th, 2024

National Illinois Day is Coming!
December 7th, 2024, mark your calendars! It's time to celebrate the magnificent state of Illinois, a gem in the American Midwest. From the vibrant city of Chicago to the rolling hills and endless plains, Illinois has a rich history, stunning landscapes, and some of the friendliest folks you'll ever meet.
A Brief History of Illinois
Illinois has been inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years, with the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site showcasing the remnants of an ancient Cahokia Indian city. In 1673, French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette became the first Europeans to venture into the region. The area was later part of the French colony of New France until it was ceded to the British in 1763.
In 1787, Illinois became part of the United States with the Northwest Ordinance, and in 1818, it was officially admitted as the 21st state. During the 19th century, Illinois experienced rapid growth, thanks in part to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River.
Traditions and Celebrations
On National Illinois Day, people across the state come together to celebrate their heritage and community spirit. You'll find parades, festivals, and events in cities and towns, showcasing local music, food, and crafts.
In Chicago, expect a big bash in Millennium Park, complete with live performances, food trucks, and a massive Illinois-themed cake. In Springfield, the state capital, visit the Illinois State Museum to learn more about the state's history and explore exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to Route 66.
