The History Behind Victory Day Victory Day marks the anniversary of the formal surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945, bringing an end to World War II. The Allied Powers, consisting of the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union, had been fighting against the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) since 1939. The war had claimed millions of lives, left cities in ruins, and pushed the world to the brink of destruction. On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively, leading to Japan's unconditional surrender.
