Yaaas, you guys, it's almost time to celebrate one of my favorite (and super important) holidays - World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought ! Mark your calendars for June 17th, 2025, because we're about to dive into the history, traditions, and celebrations surrounding this amazing day. So, let's start with the basics. Desertification is basically the process of fertile land transforming into desert, usually due to climate change, deforestation, and bad farming practices. And, as you can imagine, it has some serious consequences - like soil erosion, water scarcity, and loss of biodiversity. The United Nations General Assembly designated June 17th as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought back in 1995. The date was chosen to honor the African country of Eritrea, where the UN held a conference on desertification in 1993. Since then, June 17th has become a day to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet's natural resources. ...
