Appomattox Day: A Celebration of Freedom and Unity As we approach April 9th, 2025, Americans from coast to coast are gearing up to commemorate a pivotal moment in our nation's history – Appomattox Day ! This festive day marks the 160th anniversary of General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. On April 9, 1865, the two leaders met at the home of Wilmer McLean in Appomattox Court House, Virginia, to discuss the terms of surrender. The meeting lasted just over an hour, and with the signing of the documents, the war was officially brought to a close. This historic event paved the way for the Reconstruction Era, the abolition of slavery, and ultimately, a more unified America. Today, Appomattox Day is celebrated with parades, reenactments, and cultural events across the country.
