Carnival, the ultimate party before the 40-day fasting period of Lent begins, is just around the corner! This year, it falls on March 5th, 2025, and I couldn't be more excited. The vibrant colors, the infectious rhythms, the delicious food, and the joyful atmosphere – what's not to love? A Brief History Carnival, also known as Carnevale , has its roots in medieval Europe, specifically in Italy and France. The word "carnival" comes from the Latin carne vale , meaning "farewell to meat." Back then, folks would indulge in rich, fatty foods and drinks before the 40-day fasting period of Lent, which is a significant event in the Christian calendar. Over time, the celebration evolved, and different cultures added their own twists, but the core idea remains the same – to let loose and have a blast before the somber period of Lent begins.
