As we approach April 25th, 2025, people around the world are preparing to observe a solemn yet powerful holiday – Holocaust Remembrance Day, also known as Yom HaShoah. This day honors the six million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of others who were affected by the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. A Brief History of the Holocaust The Holocaust, which took place from 1939 to 1945, was a systemic persecution and extermination of Jews, Romani people, homosexuals, disabled individuals, and others deemed undesirable by the Nazi regime. The Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, implemented a range of brutal policies, including concentration camps, forced labor, and mass killings. The result was one of the darkest periods in human history, with an estimated 17 million people lost.
