December 6th, 2024: A Day to Remember and Take Action Against Violence Against Women As the winter chill sets in, Canada comes together to observe a solemn yet empowering day – the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On December 6th, we pause to honor the memories of the 14 young women who lost their lives in the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a society free from gender-based violence. The tragedy that unfolded on that fateful day, December 6, 1989, shook the nation. Marc Lépine, a gunman, walked into École Polytechnique, an engineering school in Montreal, and systematically targeted and killed 14 women, injuring 13 others before taking his own life. His motivation was a twisted ideology that blamed women for his own failures, and that's what makes this event so gut-wrenching.
