The historical background of World Refugee Day is deeply rooted in the African Refugee Day, which was first celebrated on June 20, 1974. The Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) created this day to express solidarity with African refugees, who were facing immense hardship and displacement due to conflicts, civil wars, and drought.
