On May 23rd, 2025, people all around the globe will be gathering to pay tribute to those slow-moving, long-lived, and utterly fascinating creatures - turtles! But before we dive into the festivities, let's talk about the history behind this awesome holiday. World Turtle Day was founded back in 1990 by the American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a non-profit group dedicated to protecting these incredible animals and their habitats. The brainchild of Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson ( founders of ATR), this special day aimed to spread awareness about the plight of turtles, many of which are facing extinction due to habitat destruction, pollution, and hunting.
