Krampusnacht, the most mischievous and terrifying holiday of the year, is just around the corner! On December 5th, 2024, people across Europe and beyond will don horns, fur, and chains to celebrate the half-goat, half-demon creature that is Krampus. A Brief History of Krampus Origins of Krampus date back to pre-Christian Alpine traditions, where the half-goat, half-demon creature was said to roam the mountains and forests, punishing naughty children during the winter months. The name "Krampus" comes from the Old High German word "krampen", meaning "claw". According to legend, Krampus was the horned, shaggy-haired companion of Saint Nicholas, tasked with disciplining children who misbehaved throughout the year. In the 17th century, the Catholic Church attempted to banish Krampus, deeming him a pagan symbol.
