Drop Everything and Read Day - April 12th, 2025

I'm beyond excited to share with you the awesomeness that is Drop Everything and Read Day, happening on April 12th, 2025! Can you believe it's almost here?!
This fantastic holiday has been around since 1995, when it was first created by Beverly Cleary, the beloved American author known for her popular children's books like Henry Huggins and Ramona the Pest. Cleary, who would have turned 109 on April 12th, wanted to encourage kids to put aside their daily tasks and simply read for the joy of it! Who wouldn't love that?
The idea behind this holiday is beautifully simple: pick a book, any book you like, and dedicate the day to reading it from cover to cover. No distractions, no interruptions, just you and your chosen literary companion. It's a day to relax, unwind, and let the magic of words transport you to new worlds and experiences.
So, how do people celebrate this amazing holiday? Well, it's as creative as it gets! Some folks plan ahead, selecting their favorite books or discovering new ones, while others prefer to pick a book randomly off the shelf. Families often make it a fun, bonding experience, reading together and discussing their favorite characters and plot twists. Some schools even organize reading marathons, where students take turns reading aloud to each other. Talk about a fun way to build a love for reading!
One of the coolest traditions is the DEAR Day Challenge, where readers are encouraged to take a break from their busy schedules and read for at least 30 minutes. Yes, just 30 minutes! It might not seem like much, but trust me, it's an amazing way to clear your mind and recharge. And, as an added incentive, many libraries and bookstores offer special discounts and promotions on DEAR Day, so you can stock up on new reads and spread the love.
In recent years, social media has played a significant role in amplifying the celebrations. Readers from all over the world share their reading experiences, posting photos of their chosen books, and using hashtags like #DEARday and #DropEverythingAndRead. It's incredible to see people from different backgrounds and age groups coming together, united by their passion for reading!
If you're looking for ways to make the most of DEAR Day, here are a few ideas to get you started: set up a cozy reading nook, grab a cuppa (or two, or three...), and get lost in your book. You could also invite friends over for a reading party, or even organize a book exchange with your neighbors. And, if you're feeling extra adventurous, try reading a book in a new, outdoor setting – like a park or a beach!
As April 12th approaches, I find myself getting more and more excited. Drop Everything and Read Day is a celebration of the simple joys in life, a reminder that reading is a powerful tool for relaxation, growth, and connection. So mark your calendars, gather your favorite reads, and get ready to indulge in a day of pure, unadulterated reading bliss!
Happy reading, everyone!
