Decoration Day - May 26th, 2025

Oh man, it's almost here! May 26th, 2025, is just around the corner and I can barely contain my excitement! You know what that means? It's time to break out the grill, dust off those lawn chairs, and deck the halls... err, I mean, the graves and yards with flowers and flags! Decoration Day is one of my favorite holidays, and I'm so stoked to share its rich history and traditions with you!

Decoration Day has it that this special day originated back in the late 1860s, during the Civil War. After the war, Americans wanted to find ways to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers who fought for their country. They started decorating the graves of the soldiers with flowers, thus the name "Decoration Day". Over time, the tradition spread throughout the United States, and soon, people began to use it as an opportunity to not only honor the soldiers but also to kick off the summer season!

Today, Decoration Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May, which means we get a nice, long weekend to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the beautiful spring weather! One of the most iconic traditions is visiting local cemeteries, where people lay flowers, wreaths, and even hold small ceremonies to honor the fallen soldiers. It's truly humbling to see people come together to show their respect and gratitude.

In addition to visiting cemeteries, people also take part in various community activities like parades, memorial services, and even charity runs! Many folks use this opportunity to get a head start on their summer gardening, too. You'll see plenty of homeowners and neighborhoods working together to tidy up public spaces, plant flowers, and show off their patriotism with American flags and buntings.

Another super fun aspect of Decoration Day is, of course, the food! You can bet your boots there'll be plenty of backyard barbecues, potlucks, and outdoor feasts galore! Classic American fare like hot dogs, hamburgers, coleslaw, and those delicious summer sides like potato salad and baked beans will be in high demand! And let's not forget the desserts – watermelon, patriotic cupcakes, and homemade pies... oh my!

Lastly, Decoration Day often marks the official start of summer vacation for many schools and colleges, so families take full advantage of the extended weekend to plan mini-vacations, too! You'll see families packing up their cars for road trips, camping excursions, or beach getaways. It's truly the perfect way to kick off the sunny season!

As the big day approaches, I'm getting more and more pumped! Decoration Day is truly a celebration of our nation's history, community spirit, and the joy of longer, sunnier days ahead. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or an all-around summer lover, there's something for everyone to enjoy on this special day!

Happy Decoration Day, folks! Can't wait to see how you're celebrating!
