Towel Day - May 25th, 2025

May 25th, 2025 - the day when towel enthusiasts from all over the world come together to celebrate the most epic of holidays - Towel Day! I mean, who wouldn't want to dedicate an entire day to the humble towel? That unsung hero of the bathroom, always there to dry our tears (and our bodies), never complaining, never seeking attention. Well, on May 25th, all that changes.

The Origins of Towel Day

It all started with the science fiction series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, written by the brilliant Douglas Adams. In the book, Adams describes the towel as "the most massively useful thing in the universe". And, let's be real, who can argue with that? The towel is, indeed, the ultimate problem-solver. Need to dry off after a shower? Towel. Want to sit on a dirty bench? Towel. Need to wrap a gift? You guessed it - towel!

So, in 2001, just two weeks after Adams' passing, fans of the series decided to pay tribute to the author and his beloved towel by creating Towel Day. And, since then, it's been a annual celebration of all things towel-related.

Don't panic! (A phrase that's also very much associated with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.) The Towel Day Anthem is simply the phrase "Don't Panic!" sung to the tune of the traditional "Happy Birthday" song.

The Towel Day flag is also a popular tradition. It's a simple white towel with a black streak drawn in the middle (a nod to the towel has absorbed all the mess in the universe). You can fly it proudly on Towel Day, or even just display it in your home or office.
