International Youth Day - August 12th, 2025

International Youth Day is just around the corner, and I am beyond excited to share all the amazing things about this incredible holiday! This year, it's on August 12th, 2025, and trust me, you won't want to miss it.

But before we dive into the fun stuff, let's talk about the history behind this special day. International Youth Day was first introduced by the United Nations in 1999, with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of young people's involvement in global issues. It's a day to recognize the potential, energy, and creativity of youth, and to empower them to become active participants in shaping their own future.

The idea for International Youth Day was born out of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, which took place in Lisbon, Portugal in 1998. This conference brought together governments, NGOs, and other organizations to discuss the challenges facing young people and to identify ways to support their development. The outcome was a commitment to create a special day to celebrate and empower young people, and thus International Youth Day was born!

So, how do people celebrate International Youth Day?

Well, the beauty of this holiday is that there's no one "right" way to celebrate it. It's a day for young people to come together, be heard, and make a difference. Some organizations and communities organize events, campaigns, and activities that focus on issues like education, employment, health, and equality. Others use social media to raise awareness about the challenges facing young people, using hashtags like #YouthDay and #InternationalYouthDay to spread the word.

In some countries, International Youth Day is marked with concerts, festivals, and other cultural events that showcase young people's talents and creativity. In others, it's an opportunity for young people to take part in community service projects, like cleaning up local parks or volunteering at food banks.

But what I love most about International Youth Day is that it's not just about celebrating young people – it's about empowering them to become change-makers.

It's a day to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about young people, to recognize their potential and to give them the support and resources they need to make a positive impact in their communities. It's a day to remind ourselves that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today.

In many countries, International Youth Day is marked with special events and ceremonies that recognize the achievements of young people. There are awards ceremonies, where outstanding young people are honored for their contributions to their communities. There are also debates, discussions, and workshops, where young people can share their ideas and perspectives on the issues that matter most to them.

So, what can you do to get involved in International Youth Day?

If you're a young person, use August 12th as an opportunity to raise your voice, share your ideas, and take action on the issues that matter most to you. If you're an organization or community group, consider hosting an event or campaign that celebrates and empowers young people. And if you're just someone who cares about making a difference, use social media to spread the word about International Youth Day and to show your support for the young people in your life.

International Youth Day is more than just a holiday – it's a movement. It's a call to action, a reminder that young people have the power to shape their own future and to create positive change in the world. So, let's come together to celebrate this amazing day, and to empower the young people who will lead us into a brighter, better future!
