National Sweet Tea Day - August 21st, 2025
August 21st is just around the corner, and you know what that means... it's almost time to bust out the pitchers and celebrate National Sweet Tea Day! This beloved holiday has been observed since 2010, and let me tell you, it's a big deal in the South.
Sweet tea has been a staple in Southern cuisine for centuries, and its history dates back to the 18th century. The story goes that English settlers brought tea to the American colonies, where it quickly became a popular beverage. However, the hot summers in the South made it difficult to enjoy a hot cuppa, so someone (we're not sure who, but we're eternally grateful!) had the genius idea to add sugar and ice to create a refreshing, sweet, and tangy drink. And thus, sweet tea was born!
In the South, sweet tea is more than just a drink – it's a way of life. It's the go-to beverage at family gatherings, barbecues, and church socials. It's the comforting cup that's always waiting on the porch, ready to quench your thirst after a long day of working in the yard. And on National Sweet Tea Day, we get to celebrate all that and more!
So, how do people celebrate this sweet holiday? Well, first things first, you've got to have the perfect glass of sweet tea. That means using black tea, plenty of sugar (or simple syrup, if you're feeling fancy), and a whole lot of ice. Some folks like to add a slice of lemon, but we won't judge if you're a purist who likes it straight up.
Once you've got your drink of choice, it's time to get this party started! Many people host sweet tea parties, complete with finger foods, lawn games, and plenty of rockin' chairs. It's the perfect excuse to gather 'round with friends and family, share some stories, and make some memories.
Of course, no National Sweet Tea Day would be complete without some delicious sweet tea-infused treats. We're talking sweet tea cupcakes, sweet tea cookies, and even sweet tea-flavored ice cream (yes, it's a thing, and it's amazing!). If you're feeling adventurous, you could try whipping up some sweet tea-glazed chicken or sweet tea-braised short ribs.
In addition to the parties and treats, many businesses and organizations use National Sweet Tea Day as an opportunity to give back. Some restaurants offer discounted sweet tea, while others donate a portion of their sales to local charities. It's a wonderful way to spread some love and kindness, all while enjoying a glass (or two, or three...) of sweet tea.
As you can probably tell, I'm a little excited about National Sweet Tea Day. It's a celebration of all things Southern, from the food to the hospitality to the good ol' fashioned fun. So grab your pitcher, fill it up with some sweet tea goodness, and get ready to toast to this beloved holiday!
And hey, if you're feeling extra festive, you could even share your own sweet tea recipe or tradition on social media using the hashtag #NationalSweetTeaDay. Who knows, you might just inspire someone to try something new and delicious!
In the meantime, I'll be over here, sipping on a glass of sweet tea and counting down the days until August 21st. Happy National Sweet Tea Day, y'all!
